Examination

There is much more to your eye examination at our practice than finding out if you need spectacles or contact lenses. We carry out a range of tests to assess the health of your eyes. Everyone’s eyesight is different and so we tailor the eye examination to your individual circumstances. This is based on elements and certain tests, where appropriate, judged on our professional evaluation and your visual requirements.

History and Symptoms

A full medical history and medication list is taken, and we discuss any problems you may be having with your eyesight or general health in a confidential and comfortable environment.

Spectacle Assessment

If you already wear glasses or contact lenses, you need to bring these with you to your appointment. We will check to see how well you can see with them by establishing their type and optical power.

Refraction

This part of the examination establishes whether you need an optical prescription, and which lenses best suit your vision. The near vision (reading), distance vision (driving or TV) and intermediate vision (computer) are all tested. From the test we will then be able to see whether you are shortsighted, longsighted, presbyopic or have an astigmatism. Overtime everyone’s vision changes and you may experience one or more of the above conditions. However all can be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses.

Oculomotor Balance

This test makes sure that you have comfortable vision at all times by checking that both your eyes are coordinated, it is important that your eye muscles work together.

Pupil Reflexes

The amount of light reaching the retina at the back of the eye s controlled by the pupil, images seen by the brain can be affected by this. Neurological problems may be caused by an unusual pupil reflex.

Intraocular Pressure

This test measures the pressure inside your eyes. A disease that may lead to blindness is known as glaucoma; too much pressure can indicate signs of glaucoma. It is essential for those who are over 40 or for those with glaucoma in the family to be tested for glaucoma. A visual field test and ophthalmoscopy are also conducted from which the results are evaluated in conjunction with the results from the glaucoma test.

Visual Field Test

Glaucoma and neurological conditions can be detected by testing your all around vision. More attention is paid to your peripheral sight as one of the main signs of glaucoma is losing your field of vision.

Ophthalmoscopy

This test checks the health of your eyes. Using an ophthalmoscope, a light is shone through your pupil into the eye. The internal parts of your eye are therefore able to be seen clearly, such as your lens, retina and optic nerve. Health problems and eye diseases like diabetes, cataracts, hypertension, glaucoma and macular degeneration will also be checked.

Visual Assessment

When your eye examination is finished, we will give you an explanation of your vision and your eye health. Based on your visual needs we will them recommend a time suitable for when you should have your next eye examination. Our ophthalmic practitioner will also be happy to answer any questions you may have about your eyesight and the examination.
